on the wrens nest estate dudley people often put a black plank of wood vertically on the outside of the window following a death in the family

can anyone shed any light on the reason ?

has anyone seen or heard of this ?

It would seem to be a spin off, of the old Victorian custom of tying Black Crape to the door to announce a death to passers by. The drawing of curtains today is yet another one. The old saying went; " Ring the Bell softly, there's crape on the door ".  The area was also a small mining community in the past, and any miner killed down a pit, would have been bought home on a plank, in a wooden handcart, or even in a wheel barrow.


A wonderful thing is work, I could watch it all day.  ( See my Blog entry )
