In 1939, the South Staffordshire Regiment were in Cawnpore, India.  Around April, 1939, two of it's soldiers disappeared, believed at first to have deserted. This proved to be not the case, and the search for the missing men was intensified, nothing was found. Private Johnson, and Gunner Gordon, had, it seemed, vanished off the face of the earth. Almost ten months later, following a tip-off, a search was made of a Cawnpore Brahmin's house, and an army rifle was discovered. The weapon had been issued to Private Johnson. It now became fairly certain, that both men had met an untimely end, and the assumption was that they had been murdered. This was the case then in February,1940, and no more reports seem to have been made. Now I don't know from where in the region either man came, so if anyone has any further information, I would appreciate the assistance.
